Lets face it, most of you don’t actually know what it is I’m doing here – even though I’ve told you several times. Its ok, really. I’m usually not listening when you talk to me about stuff either. As I’m getting settled into the place – and because i had a meeting with my supervisor I’ll disburse some info – which you may do what you like with.
IM HERE TO STUDY PATTERNS OF MIGRATION IN BROWN TROUT (Salmo trutta)
It looks, after my meeting with Gerry, that how i decide to investigate this question is up to me. I should go for a 4 pronged attack. 1 main component or question to investigate (to make up roughly 50 percent of the phd thesis) and 3 other smaller focussed studies or experiments.
I was really pleased at the scope for a wide range of tools to answer the questions. Access to various wet labs, a fish hatchery, the portabello marine labs, lots of field equip, genetics tools and an annual budget of 3500 nz$. Its like somebody telling you that you have 3 years, some money and resources to do what the hell you like. Unfortunately, as Agnes pointed out to me before, 3 years is not that long a time. it comprises only 2 field seasons – the first of which starts in nov. so i have 6 weeks to come up with my ideas and a budget.
anybody got any ideas? or budget. also useful. nobody got any spare umm ... budget?
There’s a good chance that i could end up working in some cool remote places in the interior. a place called Cromwell, was one place mentioned. the nz game and fisheries will hopefully be happy to assist where they can since my research benefits them. Apparently the best is just to get out there and have look for good study sites. What an absolute stinking bugger.
PS had the health and safety induction and there are no such things as Safe Working Practice, and Risk Assessment forms to fill out. He said some things they adopted from the
whats all this safety in the event of an earthquake talk though eh?. heheheh (nervous laughing). At least I wont get killed by a falling box of RA and SWP forms. that would be the bloody limit! Boet, can you ask Susan if they do an RA for storing masses of useless RA forms. I can think of several hazards. get back to me.
On a seperate note - the house is becoming more homely. i took some pictures but they are taking ages to upload so im not sure i'll get them up here today. there was an aweful commotion and fight going on downstairs last night. could almost still hear it with my earplugs in. almost. im not sure if its a common occurance and overall I would feel more comfortable with the axe under my pillow, but there isnt one. no axe that is, i do have pillows. I have two of them. sometimes i do put a pillow under a pillow, but thats only for reading. If there is a brutal murder I'll let you know so you can watch the news and see where I live. save uploading the photos.
