Mt Cargill

We managed to squeeze in a hike up Mt Cargill last week Sat. Its a good track - relatively stiff (680 metres at the top). starts off in douglas fir plantations, moves into native forest as you ascend, and finally gives way to stunted shrubs and grass near the top. The views make it well worth the effort. Actually you can drive up too from the other side. We didnt drive but we saw some 'cuddly' youngsters who had. tsk tsk. There is a marathon that goes up the 3 main peaks around dunedin - including Mt cargill. Agnes and I both agreed that we are some way off managing that, but Agnes says she is going to get fit enough to be able to do it during her time in New Zealand. Isnt it Agnes? She is nodding and jogging on the spot as I write this.

Near the top of the track - sneaky look at part of Dunedin and the coastline going south. Prob cant see it in the pic, but the beaches looked long and sandy.

I, looking contemplatively and eating. Its a difficult art to master. Remembering to chew is is key

Agnes stretches before the last dash for the summit

This is the Otago peninsula (or "Otago" as Agnes calls it - Ive explained that Otago is the whole area, but its easier just to call it the peninsula Otago, so thats what it is from now on. If any of you come to Otago we will definitely go to Otago. We are planning to go to Otago soon so keep checking the blog for pictures) Agnes says im being mean, but I prefer the term honest.

Looking northwards along the coast. there are snow capped mountains in the background somewhere, but maybe not in this picture.
