Hello everyone.
We made it back from our trip to check out the Taieri Catchment. We took the camping gear (hired - ie tent didnt have enough pegs, blow up mattress wouldnt stay blown up). We covered a lot of ground. It really was like being in another country - so different from Dunedin. Very dry, very beautiful. Extremely peaceful. The nights were so dark we could see swathes of stars from horizon to horizon.
The Taieri is the 4th longest river in New Zealand. Its a strange shape. Winds around the rock and pillar ridge - basically turning back on itself around a high bit of ground, then runs to Mosgiel and the sea. Traditionally low intensity sheep grazing (well actually Moa came before the sheep I suppose), its a little more under threat from in particular dairy farming. Irrigating dry land has its costs.
In order for you to experience it I have created a google map with images (technology EH!) and info that you can look at . Click on the points of interest I have added for photos and storys. If you want to enlarge the photos right click them and click "view image". I have tried to highlight the river more or less for the area where we were. You might have to zoom in a bit at some points where there are a couple of map points close together.
Hope it gives you a good idea of things over here, and hopefully a few of you can make it over to experience it for yourself.

or just look to the left and do it there - I have imbedded the map into the blog!! well i think i have

Wow, it looks amazing. The only thing is that right clicking does not give the option to enlarge the images on my computer. You are quite a techi kind of guy to get that onto Google Maps. It really looks very dry too.
